How Dubai’s New Driverless Pods Will Change City Transport

They aim to ease Dubai’s heavy traffic

Dubai is preparing for another leap in futuristic transport, as the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) unveils plans for a new driverless mobility system called Glydways. Designed to tackle the emirate’s growing traffic challenges, the project introduces small autonomous electric pods that could reshape how people move around the city.

What is Glydways?

Glydways is an automated transit network made up of compact, self-driving electric vehicles that run on dedicated narrow guideways. Unlike traditional public transport systems that share space with regular traffic, these pods operate on exclusive tracks, allowing them to move independently without congestion delays.

Each pod is designed to carry between four and six passengers, making it a personal and efficient travel option for small groups. Despite their size, the vehicles are expected to reach speeds of up to 50km/h and cover distances of up to 250km on a single operational cycle.

According to RTA plans, the system is capable of transporting more than 10,000 passengers per hour in each direction, positioning it as a high-capacity solution for busy urban corridors.

How the Driverless Pods Will Work

The Glydways system operates using a combination of autonomous vehicle technology, artificial intelligence and lightweight infrastructure. The pods run on narrow guideways that can either be elevated above ground or installed at street level, depending on the location.

How the Driverless Pods Will Work

This design allows the system to fit into dense urban environments without requiring large-scale construction or disruption. The guideways are engineered to be compact, similar in scale to a bike lane, making them easier to integrate into existing city layouts.

Once operational, passengers will be able to request a pod on demand. The vehicle will then travel directly to their destination without stopping for other passengers along the way, offering a point-to-point travel experience.

Planned Locations Across Dubai

The RTA has identified several key areas where Glydways could be introduced. These include a mix of residential, commercial and cultural destinations aimed at improving connectivity across the city.

One of the proposed routes includes a 2.8km stretch connecting National Paints Metro Station to Bluewaters, providing a key link between public transport and popular leisure destinations.

Other potential locations include Madinat Jumeirah, Alserkal Avenue, Times Square Centre and Dubai Festival City. These areas have been selected due to high footfall and demand for improved transport connectivity.

If implemented successfully, the system could be operational across four major locations in Dubai, with early rollout discussions suggesting deployment could happen within the year.

Partnership with Parkin and Park-and-Ride Plans

In April 2026, further developments were announced involving Glydways and Dubai’s public parking operator Parkin. The collaboration is expected to introduce a park-and-ride concept across multi-storey parking facilities in the emirate.

This integration would allow commuters to park their vehicles and switch seamlessly to driverless pods for the final part of their journey, reducing congestion on major roads and improving overall traffic flow.

A Step Toward Smart Mobility

Dubai continues to position itself as a global leader in smart transport innovation, and Glydways is part of a broader strategy to reduce traffic congestion and improve urban mobility.

A Step Toward Smart Mobility

The system is designed to be cost-effective, scalable and quick to deploy, with developers claiming it could be operational within months of approval. While no final launch date has been confirmed, the concept has already gained attention for its potential to transform everyday commuting.

Glydways also aims to offer 24/7 availability, providing an on-demand transport solution that is both flexible and efficient for residents and visitors.

The Future of Transport in Dubai

As cities worldwide look for sustainable alternatives to traditional transport systems, Dubai’s adoption of autonomous pod networks reflects its long-term vision for innovation-driven infrastructure.

If successful, Glydways could become a key part of the emirate’s transport ecosystem, offering a cleaner, faster and more connected way to navigate the city.

With rising demand for efficient mobility solutions, the introduction of driverless pods may soon shift from futuristic concept to everyday reality in Dubai.
